Wired Up
It was really an exciting time in Cincinnati… I got to sit by him a bit also and chat after the show and his presentation… with the big boom of this new media platform of the internet meeting John Plunkett was a great pleasure…
John is one of the founding designers of Wired Magazine… John Plunkett, Creative Director, WIRED Magazine, with his partner Barbara Kuhr, created the look and feel of the award winning WIRED and the ground breaking, innovative HotWired on the World Wide Web. I also saw John when I was in SOMA for a second time. The approach to thier design is meant to communicate the sped-up, off-center whirl of late 20th century culture, the cowabunga fun of surfing the Third Wave.
It has been said that “Plunkett was a smiling happy man of whom, for some reason, people were apprehensive. ”
I hit it off great - he seemed intrigured by by cyberspace cultural knowledge and thought it was neat to have had the chance to meet neil gaimand… I asked him the same questions… like how do you keep your design simple when you can just about go everywhere with your design… he went into his use of color which I fell in love with immediately … I love the technological application of hexachrome use, spot varnishes and David Carson’esque’ typography… in all it makes for a great conemporary statement… I have collected his work ever since…
